2003 ford explorer review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The modern american wagon. introductionthe ford explorer is one of the best sport-utilities in its class. A stiffer frame and a fully independent suspension provide superior ride and handling on road and off road. Its v6 was revised last year and a v8 was added as an option. Both are available with a superb five-speed automatic. It's roomy, capable of seating seven people when equipped with the optional third row that folds flat into the cargo floor when not being used. for 2003, ford added more standard equipment and important new options. Xls and xlt come standard with cloth upholstery; eddie bauer and limited come trimmed in leather. an overhead-cam v6 engine is standard on all models. An overhead-cam v8 800) is an option for all models except the xls. Ford's new five-speed automatic transmission 1095) is optional and we highly recommend it. Xls comes a high level of standard equipment, including a new am/fm/cassette/cd stereo, but it does not offer some of the high-zoot options available on the other models, including the v8. An $1150 sport group for the xls adds the premium center console, step bars, body-color metallic wheel lip moldings, and 16-inch aluminum wheels. xlt 28,745) gets nicer sport cloth upholstery, a six-way power driver's seat, body-colored exterior trim, and more luxury features, such as a temperature gauge and compass, map lights and dome lights, outside approach lighting, extra power outlets, and an illuminated keypad for keyless entry. The five-speed automatic transmission is standard, and aluminum alloy wheels replace steel wheels. New for 2003 are a chrome grille and black-grain outside door handles. Leather upholstery with a six-way power driver's seat is available for $655. Six-way adjustable heated power seats with dual manual lumbar supports are used in front, and the driver's seat has a three-position memory feature. The top two explorer models differ only in their distinctive trim: eddie bauer comes with arizona beige bumpers, moldings, lower bodyside cladding, satin-nickel wheels and grille, and p245/65r17 all-terrain tires. Limited uses monochromatic bumpers, moldings and cladding with a silver grille and unique wheels; the limited model is available in white pearl-coat paint with frost accents. options for all models except xls include third-row seating 670), auxiliary air conditioning 610), running boards 395), power adjustable pedals 120), reverse sensing system 255), and power moonroof 800). The canopy also promises improved side-impact protection by staying inflated for a much longer period of time. Ford has done a great deal of research on this technology and we strongly recommend ordering the safety canopy. Dual front airbags are standard, and feature smart technology that adjusts their inflation rate according to the severity of the accident. Anti-lock brakes (abs) are standard on all models; abs allows the driver to brake and steer at the same time in a panic stop. Seatbelts use retractors and pre-tensioners designed to reduce injuries in a hard crash. This newest explorer achieved a 4-star driver/5-star front-passenger ratings in the government's national highway traffic safety administration front crash tests. walkaroundthe current ford explorer is the same length overall as the pre-2002 models, but it rides on a longer wheelbase (by 2 inches) and a much wider track. Pushing the wheels out toward the corners makes the explorer more stable and more comfortable. All new last year, this explorer shares only its name with the pre-2002 models involved in the firestone tire recall. the explorer's styling is fresh, contemporary. It looks solid and handsome. Smoothly integrated front and rear fascia are used in place of the traditional bumper treatments. Jeweled headlamps and tail lamps give it a sophisticated look. Yet this newly designed explorer clearly evokes the previous-generation explorer. No one will have trouble identifying it. Few will notice it at all. I dropped something next to the curb while getting out of the explorer one dark night; hitting the button on the key fob illuminated the approach lights and i immediately spotted it. Uplevel models come standard with an illuminated keypad on the door for keyless entry. The keypad doesn't improve the appearance of the explorer, but ford says it's a popular feature among loyal owners. the standard roof rack is designed to support up to 200 pounds. For messier cargo, there's a new nbx package 1110), which includes a yakima multi-use loadwarrior cargo basket, special black exterior trim, special seat cloth, and 17-inch machined aluminum wheels mounted with b. Goodrich rugged trail t/a p245/65r17 tires. interiorthe ford explorer is a comfortable vehicle on long trips. Convenience features abound that make it pleasant while driving and when stopping. The eddie bauer model comes with the traditional beige steering wheel and pinhole leather seating material. Handsome gray wood accents lend a luxurious appearance. Light-colored trim on the inside a-pillars and grab handle add to a light, airy atmosphere. It's a successful execution, though the mouse-fur roof liner is nothing to write home about. We found the cloth seats in the xlt comfortable, firm and supportive, with lots of adjustments. adjustable pedals, a telescoping steering wheel and long seat travel help the explorer fit a wide variety of body types. Big coat hooks accommodate thick hangers and big loads of dry cleaning, something few manufacturers get right. Nicely designed cubby holes with rubber mats provide space for wallet, sunglasses, a pen, cans, and bottles. A relatively large center console keep odds and ends in check. Interior door handles seem a bit awkward at first, but that went away with familiarization. Map pockets on the insides of the doors are handy and swell at the end to hold water bottles, but wouldn't accommodate my one-liter bottle from poland springs. The front power outlet was positioned well for a cell phone, but like most, was a bit of a reach for a radar detector. The trip computer came in handy, calculating the distance to an empty fuel tank. the front seats are comfortable. They are wider and offer more fore-and-aft travel than before. Seat heaters are part of the eddie bauer way of living. But the buttons that control them are mounted on the sides of seats, which is a bit awkward. Reaching down to the side of the driver's seat, the left hand is confronted with an array of seat adjusters; finding and pressing the seat-heater button is a challenge. Likewise, it isn't always easy to find the height adjuster. But rake is easy to adjust, and there's a knob on the up-level seats for cranking in some lumbar support. the second row of seats, the row we recommend for those who didn't get to drive or sit up front, is quite comfortable. It's also stylish, among the best-looking in a group of handsome full-size pickups for the 2006 model year. properly equipped, an f-150 can tow 9,900 pounds or haul more than 3,000 pounds in the bed. The f-150 is comfortable as well, with a quiet and refined ride and comfortable interiors that show attention to detail. Handling is excellent for a pickup. the f-150 earned a five-star safety rating from the government (nhtsa) in frontal crash testing and was named a 'best pick' in offset-crash rating from the insurance institute for highway safety. F-150 comes equipped with dual frontal airbags designed to deploy according to the severity of the crash and who or what is occupying the seat. Ford has not significantly changed the f-150 since then except to expand the lineup every year with new trim levels, variations, and specialty models. for 2006, supercrew (crew cab) models will be available with a longer, 6. 5-foot bed; as well as the standard 5. 5-foot short bed. A limited-production harley-davidson edition, previously offered on super duty models, is now available as an f-150 supercab (extended cab). The xl, stx, xlt, fx4, lariat, and king ranch each boast their own interior style and features. Engines, suspensions and cab configurations are designed to meet specific needs. Wheelbases as long as 163. 0 inches (e. G., a supercab with the 8-foot long bed) are available. three engines are offered: a 4. 2-liter v6, a 4. 6-liter v8, and a 5. 4-liter v8. The xlt instrument panel gets more flash than either the xl or stx dash; and power windows, mirrors and locks with remote keyless entry are standard. The xlt features an overhead rail console system that the owner can tailor to his or her needs. Fog lamps come standard on 4wd xlts. An xlt supercrew 4wd 5. 4-liter v8 automatic retails for $34,055. fx4 is a special off-road model. The interior features a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a floor shifter, and chrome accents; while the exterior is distinguished by a unique grille, 18-inch cast aluminum wheels, and body-color or dark shadow gray bumpers, depending on paint choice. Fx4 is available in regular cab, supercab, and supercrew body styles, but the long (8-foot) bed is not available. The standard engine is the 5. 4-liter v8. The fx4 has its own instrument package with carbon mesh accents on the metallic dashboard. Captain's chairs in cloth or leather are optional. An f-150 fx4 supercrew 4wd retails for $35,495. lariat is the luxury model, distinguished visually by a unique grille design (chrome housing around arizona beige insert) and bright-finish 18-inch aluminum wheels. Bumpers are chrome or arizona beige. Lariat features black-on-cream instruments, lots of wood trim and brushed metal, a multi-function steering wheel, and a shiny floor shifter mounted in a floor console. A power-adjustable and leather-trimmed 40/20/40 split bench seat with seat memory is standard, along with power-adjustab. walkaroundin the late 1990s, f-150 went aerodynamically curvy, and although it remained number one in sales, not everyone liked the look. So for 2004, ford returned the f-150 to its square-shouldered roots, with a more utilitarian look that continues essentially unchanged for 2006. it's a functional look, but in its own way it's at least as stylish as the much-heralded dodge ram. In fact, the f-150 has a unique image, no small feat when designing within the hard parameters imposed by a pickup. It's at once crisp, bold, and sturdy. In short, we think the f-150 is a great-looking truck. the f-150 shares styling cues with ford's handsome super duty pickups, including the sharp downward drop in the forward part of the door windows, allowing a clear view of the massive outside mirrors. A high beltline gives the truck visual strength and makes occupants feel more secure. the whole nose is square in concept, with a large, bold, big-rig grille opening. Yet the front fascia wraps around to the fenders for a precise, sophisticated appearance. The bodyside and cargo box sheet metal is chiseled, though it looks slab-sided at the same time, a theme that carries through to the tailgate. F-150 is both upscale and utilitarian, a look that's very appealing. the different trim levels are quite distinctive. Just one example: xlt and lariat have a honeycomb grille (black on xlt, arizona beige on lariat), while xl, stx, fx4, and king ranch wear a bar-style grille. practical considerations are a big part of the design, and some of this can be easily seen. Every bed, no matter which length or style, is more than 22 inches deep, for a generous margin when hauling larger cargoes. The basic xl is surprisingly nice. At the other end of the spectrum is the king ranch, which evokes images of texas and cowboys. We love the king ranch, but it's not for everyone. we found the xlt's front bench seats attractive, but they are flat and lack support. The front bench is split three ways. The center section flips down to reveal a center console with storage and cup holders. They also looked great, trimmed in black leather with light gray stitching. Adjusting the power seats may be a little awkward for drivers with big arms, however, because the clearance between the door armrest and the seat is a little tight. Rake adjustment on the power driver's seat is manual, and raking it forward can be a bit awkward. The center console between the captain's chairs is deep, holds a lot of stuff, and features a pair of big, solid cup holders. The floor shifter for the automatic transmission works very well. radio and hvac (heater) controls are plain but straightforward and easy to operate. Lariat comes with every known. With nearly 900,000 annual sales, the f-150 has been the best-selling vehicle (car or truck) in america for 21 consecutive years. now, they've thrown away the old formula and created a brand new f-150 from the ground up. ford admits the new f-150 is bigger, heavier, and more expensive to build than the wildly successful previous version. It is also the best-handling, quietest, most car-like full-size pickup truck in the history of the world. All of the new f-150 models feature all-new interiors that show attention to detail. The seats vary, but all are comfortable and supportive. Each boasts its own interior style and features engines, suspensions and cab configurations designed to meet specific needs. It features an all-new work-truck interior and comes with all the basics such as 40/20/40 bench seats in vinyl or cloth, an all-plastic dashboard, a black grille and 17-inch steel wheels. Xl is available in regular cab or supercab styles. An f-150 xl regular cab 2wd automatic retails for $21,215, while a long-wheelbase (145-inch) 4x4 is priced at $24,855. stx is sportier than the xl, with a body-colored grille surround for the black bar grille, and 17-inch cast aluminum wheels. Stx comes in styleside (flat) and flareside (fendered) body styles, in regular cab or supercab, with either a 6. 5-foot or a 5. 5-foot cargo box. An f-150 fx4 supercab 4x4 5. 4-liter v8 automatic retails for $32,185. lariat is the luxury model and, for the time being, sits at the top of the line. Lariat has its own grille design and comes standard with 18-inch wheels. It amplifies the all-new interior with black-on-cream instrumentation, lots of wood trim and brushed metal, a multi-function steering wheel, and a shiny floor shifter mounted in a floor console. A power 40/20/40 split bench seat with seat memory is standard, along with power adjustable floor pedals, an in-dash message center, and climate control. Heated power leather captain's chairs are optional. Lariat 2wd models are available in all three body styles, but 4x4 versions are only available with styleside fenders. The nearest competitor has only 12 variations, a fact that ford hopes will bring more people into its dealerships. In addition to the 26 variants of the f-150 within the five model ranges, there are dozens of options,. walkaroundall ford f-150s now have the front window style popularized on the f-250 and f-350 super duty pickups: a sharp cut in the forward part of the door sheet metal that drops away to allow much clearer viewing of the large rearview mirrors on both sides. the whole nose is shaped more squarely, the grilles are larger and bolder, the bodyside and cargo box sheet metal is more sculpted, and every bed, no matter which length or style, is two inches taller than previous beds to give more margin when hauling larger cargoes. It's the seven-crossmember skeleton onto which everything else bolts, and accounts for quite a bit of the nearly 675 pounds more weight of the new f-150 compared to the old truck. The frame is nine times more resistant to twisting and 50 percent more resistant to bending than the old c-shaped frame. the front suspension is a completely new double-wishbone style for both 2wd and 4wd versions. The rear suspension now has outboard, rather than inboard, shock absorbers to control the rear end of the truck better in quick maneuvers, along with wider, heavier three-inch leaf springs. the steering has been changed to a heavy-duty power-assisted rack-and-pinion system. The ford truck folks committed only one unpardonable by us: the clear plastic over the instrument pod is way, way too reflective and makes most of the instruments difficult to see in bright sunlight. Ford says that, between these two things, the 5. 4-liter engine, which makes a nice, round 300 horsepower and 335 foot-pounds of torque, is also the fuel-stingiest engine the company has ever tested. Yet even the least-expensive f-150 isn't boring; it leaves room for customization, does the work required and keeps overhead down. with one of the deepest beds in the segment, the f-150 has generous cargo volume out back and a maximum payload rating of 3,060 pounds; most versions carry 1,600-2,100 pounds. Any cab model f-150 can be optioned to tow more than 11,000 pounds; the range varies from 5,500-11,300 pounds. (the ford super duty line of heavy-duty pickups is covered in a separate new car test drive review.) two v8 and two v6 engines are offered, all with six-speed automatic transmissions. Standard on 2wd is a 302-hp 3. 7-liter v6. All manner of options are available on the xlt, including three wheel diameters, tailgate step, cargo management and towing equipment. f-150 fx4 and fx2 come with a 5-liter v8, black grille and body-colored bumpers, trim and mirrors. Options include infotainment and 17-inch (for more severe off-road use) or 20-inch wheels. Chrome trim and bumpers highlight monotone paint, and the lariat adds heated mirrors with signal repeaters and auto-dimming on the driver's and inside, dual-zone climate control, heated power leather seats with driver memory, leather wheel with redundant audio controls, tow package, sync, trip computer, and power adjustable pedals. Options include 20-inch wheels, heated/cooled front seats, sony sound and navigation, trailer brake controller, rear camera and park sensors, and moonroof. f-150 king ranch (from $41,790) is like a lariat with a different attitude. It adds two-tone paint and kr badges, unique wheels, mesh chrome grille, chaparral leather heated and cooled power captain's chairs with driver memory, running boards, and power folding, heated, signal outside mirrors with chrome caps. Options are essentially limited to a limited-slip differential, alternative axle ratios, 20-inch wheels, sony sound and navigation systems, moonroof, chrome tube running boards and remote start. f-150 platinum supercrew (from $43,600) gets a unique satin chrome grille, body-color bumpers and wheel lip moldings, 20-inch wheels, power-deploy/retract running boards, satin chrome tailgate trim, tuxedo-stitched leather power captain's chairs, wood grain and brushed aluminum trim, rain-sensing wipers, power folding/heated mirrors, and unique console. It comes only with the 411-hp 6. 2-liter v8. Most options are dependent on the model and other options, and many features are standard on more expensive models. In addition, prices of options occasionally vary by trim level. mechanical options include engine upgrades, alternate axle ratios, limited-slip or locking differentials, larger tires and upgraded wheels, skid plates, towing mirrors, snow plow prep (with 6. 2 v8), trailer brake controller 230), 36-gallon long-bed fuel tank, tailgate step, heavy-duty payload package, and ford works systems like an in-dash computer. Other upgrades include captain's chairs bucket seats with center console, power sliding rear window, rear-view camera (with or without navigation) reverse parking sensors, tri-coat or two-tone paint, moonroof 995), sirius radio, sound systems, remote start, and navigation. safety features that come standard include antilock brakes, stability control (advancetrac rsc), trailer sway control, frontal airbags, front side airbags, and side curtain airbags. Safety-related options include an integrated trailer brake controller, rear-view camera, mykey, and reverse park sensors. walkaroundthe angular lines of the ford f-150 mean it's easier to clean, easier to park, and gives maximum inside volume for outside space. Some bulge to the hood and large grille openings imply power, as does the higher altitude of 4wd models; many models have big graphics to ensure everyone knows what it is. The view rearward can be aided by extendable towing mirrors, a rear camera, and a power sliding rear window. We found the towing mirrors work very well. pillars between the doors (called b-pillars) and the rear hand-hold on the pillar may yield an awkward blind spot for some drivers, but everyone should appreciate the windshield pillars (called a-pillars) shaped to help preserve forward vision.
